Natal is a major municipality in Brazil.

The city is built around the Potengi River. This river separates the North Zone from the rest of the urban area.

The history of Natal began in the late 16th century. The Captaincy of Rio Grande started in 1535. This was led by Aires da Cunha for the King of Portugal. Later, a squadron entered the mouth of the Potengi River in 1597. Construction began on the Barra do Rio Grande Fortress on January 6, 1598. This structure is now known as the Fort of the Three Wise Men.

Dutch forces occupied the area from 1633 to 1654. They seized the Barra do Rio Grande Fortress. The Dutch renamed the fortress the Castle of Keulen. They also renamed the city New Amsterdam. This name honored the capital of the Netherlands. The occupation ended when the Portuguese expelled the Dutch. The Netherlands officially recognized Portuguese sovereignty in 1661. This happened through the Treaty of The Hague. After this, the Portuguese expanded control further inland. This expansion was difficult due to resistance from Indigenous peoples.
Religious history shaped the city's identity. In 1753, fishermen found a wooden box in the Potengi River. Inside was a statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. The image became the patroness of Natal. The city also features the Church of Saint Anthony. This building is often called the "Church of the Rooster."

Modernization accelerated during the 20th century. In 1904, the city saw the arrival of acetylene gas lighting.

World War II triggered rapid population growth. The United States Department of War found Natal very strategic. They called it one of the four most strategic points in the world. This era helped transition Natal into a modern hub. The city later became known as the "Space Capital of Brazil." This title comes from the Barreira do Inferno Launch Center. This center is located in Parnamirim. It is the first rocket launch base in South America. Today, Natal remains a vital center for tourism and science.
