Narcolepsy

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people have a brain condition called narcolepsy.

This condition makes it hard to control sleep and wake cycles. Most people feel very sleepy during the day. This is not just being tired. They may fall asleep at any time. This can happen during boring tasks.

In a healthy brain, sleep has stages. You move from light sleep to deep sleep. Then you reach REM sleep. This is the stage where you dream. People with narcolepsy skip the early steps. They go straight into REM sleep. This makes their nighttime sleep poor. Their brain tries to catch up during the day.

There are two main types of narcolepsy. Type 1 includes a symptom called cataplexy. This is a sudden loss of muscle strength. It can happen when a person feels strong emotions. Laughter or surprise can cause it. The person stays awake but their body feels limp. Type 2 does not include cataplexy.

Other symptoms include sleep paralysis. This is a short time when you cannot move. It happens while waking up or falling asleep. People may also see or hear things that are not real. These are called hallucinations. There is no cure, but doctors can help with medicine and naps.
