Long ago, a general named Zhao Tuo started a kingdom.
Zhao Tuo brought new ideas to the south. He brought Chinese writing and ways to make things. He also wanted different groups to live together. He encouraged people to move to the new land.
Nanyue had a tricky relationship with the Han dynasty. The Han were a very big empire nearby. Sometimes Nanyue acted like a part of the Han. Other times, Nanyue leaders called themselves emperors.
In 111 BC, the kingdom came to an end. A leader named Zhao Xing wanted to join the Han. His prime minister, Lü Jia, did not agree. This led to a war. The Han army won the fight. Nanyue lasted for 93 years under its own rulers.
Nanyue was a powerful ancient kingdom in southern China.

The kingdom grew through new ideas and people. Zhao Tuo was the leader who started it all. He was a general from the Qin dynasty. He brought Chinese writing and new ways to make things. These skills helped the people living in the south. Zhao Tuo also wanted different groups to live together. He called this policy "Harmonizing and Gathering the Hundred Yue tribes."
Nanyue had a complicated relationship with the Han dynasty. The Han were a very large and strong empire. Sometimes Nanyue rulers acted like they were part of the Han. They would pay symbolic respect to the Han leaders. Other times, the Nanyue rulers called themselves emperors. This showed they wanted to be independent. They even had their own special items like bronze tiger tallies.
Changes in leadership eventually led to a big war. In 113 BC, a leader named Zhao Xing wanted to join the Han. His prime minister, Lü Jia, strongly disagreed with this choice. Lü Jia killed Zhao Xing and put his brother on the throne. This caused a fight with the Han dynasty. In 112 BC, Emperor Wu sent 100,000 troops to fight. The Han army destroyed Nanyue by the end of that year.
Today, people still study Nanyue to learn about history. The famous historian Sima Qian wrote about it long ago. His work is found in the Records of the Grand Historian. In Vietnam, the Nanyue rulers are called the Triệu dynasty. The name "Vietnam" actually comes from the words for Nanyue. Different historians have different views on this ancient land. It remains a very important part of the past.
Nanyue was an influential ancient kingdom located in southern China and northern Vietnam.

The kingdom grew through a process of cultural blending and administrative organization. The founders were Han Chinese leaders who brought specific skills to the southern regions. They introduced Chinese-style bureaucracy, which is a system for managing a government through officials. They also brought new handicraft techniques and the Chinese writing system. Zhao Tuo, the founder, promoted a policy called "Harmonizing and Gathering the Hundred Yue tribes."
The political mechanism of Nanyue involved a complex relationship with the Han dynasty. The Han dynasty viewed Nanyue as a vassal state. A vassal state is a smaller territory that recognizes the authority of a larger, more powerful empire. However, Nanyue functioned with a high degree of autonomy, meaning they could govern themselves. The rulers sometimes paid symbolic obeisance, or formal respect, to the Han. At other times, they declared themselves emperors to show their independent power. This tension between being a subject and being a sovereign ruler defined their diplomacy.
The history of the kingdom began with the expansion of the Qin dynasty. Around 218 BC, the First Emperor sent General Tu Sui with 500,000 soldiers to attack the Yue tribes. This campaign involved complex logistics, including the use of the Lingqu Canal to connect river systems. After the Qin dynasty collapsed in 206 BC, the general Zhao Tuo took control. In 204 BC, he established Nanyue with its capital at Panyu.
Internal political conflicts eventually led to the kingdom's downfall. In 113 BC, the fourth-generation leader, Zhao Xing, wanted to formally join the Han Empire. His prime minister, Lü Jia, strongly opposed this move. Lü Jia killed Zhao Xing and installed his brother, Zhao Jiande, on the throne instead. This action forced a direct confrontation with the Han dynasty. In 112 BC, Emperor Wu of Han launched a massive military response. He sent 100,000 troops to attack Nanyue. By the end of that year, the Han army had destroyed the kingdom and established direct rule.
Archaeology provides many details about the wealth and status of Nanyue leaders. Excavations have revealed impressive items like jade burial suits and bronze artifacts.
Nanyue holds a unique place in the historical identity of modern nations. In Vietnam, the rulers are called the Triệu dynasty. The very name "Vietnam" is derived from the Vietnamese pronunciation of Nanyue, which is Nam Việt. Traditional Vietnamese history once viewed Nanyue as a legitimate part of their own history. However, views changed over time. In the 18th century, some began to see Zhao Tuo as a foreign invader rather than a legitimate ruler. Today, the study of Nanyue connects the history of Chinese administration with the cultural roots of the Yue peoples.
