Nantes was founded at the confluence of the Erdre and the Loire rivers. This is the specific point where the Erdre flows into the larger Loire. Historically, the city featured many river channels and quays throughout the old town. This water-filled landscape earned it the nickname "Venice of the West."

However, the urban layout changed significantly during the 1920s and 1930s. During this time, many of these waterways were diverted or filled in. These former channels were subsequently replaced by the modern road networks used today.

The origins of Nantes are linked to the Namnetes, a Gaulish tribe.

This tribe established a settlement between the second and first centuries BC. They settled on the north bank of the Loire near the river confluence. The name "Namnetes" likely comes from a Gaulish root meaning "river" or "stream." The Greek writer Ptolemy recorded the settlement in his treatise, *Geography*. During the Gallo-Roman period, the name was Latinised into various forms. Eventually, the name evolved through processes like syncope, which is the suppression of a middle syllable. By the sixth century, the name had become Nantes.

Nantes has a complex political history involving many different powers.

In the first century AD, the city grew under Roman rule. In 851, the Bretons captured the city with the help of Lambert II. For a time, Nantes served as the primary residence for the Dukes of Brittany. It housed their council, their treasury, and their chancery. This changed in 1532 when Brittany joined with France. Following this union, the provincial capital moved to Rennes. Despite this shift, Nantes remained a vital financial center with its Chamber of Accounts.

The economic character of Nantes has shifted through several distinct eras.

During the 17th century, Nantes became a massive center for maritime trade. By 1700, it had become the largest port in France. Merchants imported sugar from the French West Indies, including Martinique and Guadeloupe. However, this prosperity was tied to the Atlantic slave trade. Between 1707 and 1793, Nantes was responsible for 42 percent of the French slave trade. The city's merchants sold approximately 450,000 African slaves in the West Indies. After an economic decline following the French Revolution, the city rebuilt itself through shipbuilding and food processing after 1850.

In 2013, Nantes received the European Green Capital Award. The European Commission praised the city for reducing CO2 emissions and air pollution. The city also maintains a high-quality, well-managed public transport system. These efforts help maintain the city's biodiversity and protect its many green spaces.

Nantes remains a significant cultural and ecological hub in Europe.
