Ānanda was a central figure in the early history of Buddhism.

Living during the 5th or 4th century BCE, he served as the primary attendant to the Buddha. He was also recognized as one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples. Ānanda is most famous for his extraordinary memory. Because he could recall so much, he earned the title "Treasurer of the Dhamma." The Dhamma refers to the collection of the Buddha's teachings.

His role as an attendant was both practical and administrative. After twenty years of the Buddha's ministry, the Buddha selected Ānanda as his permanent attendant. Ānanda performed many daily duties with great devotion. He brought water and cleaned the Buddha's dwelling place. He also functioned as a secretary and a mouthpiece for the Buddha.

He acted as an intermediary between the Buddha and the laypeople or the saṅgha, which is the Buddhist community. Ānanda even risked his life to protect the Buddha. During one incident, he stepped in front of a wild elephant to shield his teacher from harm.

Ānanda's life was deeply connected to the Buddha's own family.

Traditional accounts state that Ānanda was the first cousin of the Buddha. His father was a brother to Suddhodana, the Buddha's father. There are different traditions regarding his birth. Some Pāli traditions say he was born on the same day as Prince Siddhattha. Other traditions, such as the Mūlasarvāstivāda, state he was born when the Buddha attained enlightenment. This would make him much younger than the Buddha. One text notes he was a "learner," or sekha, for 25 years before attending the Buddha for another 25 years.

His path to monkhood involved several significant stages and teachers. He was ordained as a monk, though the exact timing is debated by scholars. Some sources say he ordained during the Buddha's visit to Kapilavatthu. Others suggest he ordained about twenty-five years before the Buddha's death. His early training included teachers such as Puṇṇa Mantānīputta and Belaṭṭhasīsa. The teachings of Puṇṇa helped Ānanda reach the stage of sotāpanna. This is a spiritual attainment that precedes full enlightenment. He also shared a close friendship with the disciple Sāriputta, who helped teach him Buddhist doctrine.

Ānanda played a vital role in the expansion of the Buddhist community. He was instrumental in establishing the order of bhikkhunīs, which are Buddhist nuns.

He made this possible by requesting the Buddha to ordain Mahāpajāpati Gotamī, the Buddha's foster-mother. During the Buddha's final year, Ānanda witnessed many important principles. He heard the Buddha explain that the community should use his teaching and discipline as a refuge. He also heard that the Buddha would not appoint a new leader. These moments were significant because Ānanda was present for the Buddha's final instructions.

After the Buddha's death, Ānanda became essential to the First Buddhist Council.

He had to attain enlightenment just before the council began to participate. At the council, he acted as the living memory of the Buddha. He recited many discourses and checked them for accuracy. However, he also faced criticism from Mahākassapa and the rest of the saṅgha. They chastised him for allowing women to be ordained and for certain failures in understanding the Buddha. Despite this, he remained a respected teacher and passed his heritage to pupils like Sāṇavāsī and Majjhantika.

Ānanda's legacy continues through his spiritual lineage and cultural influence. He died twenty years after the Buddha.

Monuments called stūpas were built at the river where he passed away. In Sanskrit traditions, he is seen as a patriarch of the Dhamma. He received teachings from Mahākassapa and passed them to his own students. His life has even inspired famous creators. The composer Richard Wagner and the poet Rabindranath Tagore both drew inspiration from stories of Ānanda. He remains one of the most loved figures in the Buddhist tradition due to his compassion and erudition.
