The name comes from a Maasai phrase. It means "place of cool waters." This refers to a cold stream in the area.

Nairobi grew from a small rail depot. It was started in 1898 for the Uganda–Kenya Railway.

Today, it is a very large and busy place. About 4.8 million people live in the city. Many big companies and groups work there. It is a major hub for money and business in East Africa. The city has many tall buildings and big roads.
