The subway lines account for approximately 38 percent of this total ridership. The network serves all 16 wards of Nagoya, except for Moriyama. It also reaches into Nisshin, which is the only municipality outside Nagoya with a station. 
The subway is also deeply connected to broader regional and national rail systems. It features extensive interchanges with JR Central services. For example, Nagoya Station connects the Higashiyama and Sakuradōri lines to the Tōkaidō Shinkansen. The Shinkansen is a high-speed rail network that links major Japanese cities. The subway also integrates with private operators like Meitetsu. Some lines, such as the Kamiiida Line, provide through service to the Meitetsu Komaki Line. This connectivity allows passengers to travel seamlessly between the subway and suburban railways.
