Mycoplasma are very tiny living things. They are among the smallest free-living organisms. They are only about 0.2 to 0.3 micrometers wide.

Most bacteria have a hard outer shell. We call this a cell wall. Mycoplasma do not have a cell wall. This makes them very special. Because they lack this wall, they can change shape. They are pleomorphic, which means they can look round or long.

This lack of a wall also helps them hide. Many medicines called antibiotics work by attacking cell walls. Since Mycoplasma have no wall, these medicines do not work well on them.

Most Mycoplasma are parasites. A parasite is a living thing that lives on a host to get food. They live on plants, animals, and humans. Some live in the lungs of cattle. When they grow in a lab, they make colonies. These colonies look like tiny fried eggs.
