A civil war is happening in the country of Myanmar. This conflict began on February 1, 2021, after a military coup. A coup is when the military takes control of a government. The military group is called the Tatmadaw. They formed a ruling group known as the State Administration Council, or SAC. This group is led by Min Aung Hlaing.

Many people in Myanmar did not want the military to rule. They wanted a democratic government instead. This led to large protests across the country. The military responded with a violent crackdown on these protesters.

To fight back, new groups were formed to protect people. Many protesters joined ethnic armed organizations to get training. These groups want a democratic federal state for everyone. One group is the National Unity Government, or NUG. They formed an armed wing called the People's Defense Force, or PDF.

Other groups, like the Arakan Army, also joined the fight. These groups work together to challenge the SAC. They want to change how the country is run. This has turned local protests into a large-scale war.

Conflict in Myanmar has a very long history. Fighting between different groups has happened since 1948. Many groups represent different ethnic people living in the land. For example, the Kachin Independence Army formed after a coup in 1962.

In the 1990s, the Tatmadaw took control of much of the government. They destroyed many bases used by ethnic groups. Even though there were peace agreements in 2015, they began to fall apart. This long history of fighting makes the current war very complex.

The fighting has caused a huge crisis for many people. By March 2023, the United Nations said 17.6 million people needed help. About 1.6 million people had to leave their homes.

This has caused many people to move away from their towns. The scale of the suffering is very large.

Control of the land is changing as the war continues. In late 2023, groups launched big attacks called Operation 1027.

By late 2023, the military was facing problems with low morale. Some soldiers even began to surrender without a fight. However, the military still holds many important areas. The war remains active in many parts of the country.

The Myanmar civil war is a large-scale conflict that began in early 2021. It started after the military seized control of the government in a coup. This event is known as a coup d'état. The military group, called the Tatmadaw, took power on February 1, 2021. They formed a ruling body called the State Administration Council, or SAC. This council is led by Min Aung Hlaing. The military claimed there were 8.6 million voter irregularities in the 2020 election. However, they provided no evidence for this claim.

The conflict involves many different groups with different goals. The exiled National Unity Government, or NUG, was formed by ousted leaders. They want to create a democratic federal state. To defend this goal, they formed an armed wing called the People's Defense Force, or PDF. Many ethnic armed organizations, or EAOs, also joined the fight against the SAC. These EAOs represent different ethnic groups within Myanmar. They often fight for more autonomy, which means more power to govern their own areas.

This war is part of a much longer history of fighting in Myanmar. Insurgencies have existed since 1948, mostly along ethnic lines. For example, the Kachin Independence Army, or KIA, formed after a 1962 coup. During the 1990s, the Tatmadaw destroyed many ethnic bases. In 2015, a Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement, or NCA, was signed with eight groups. However, this agreement began to fail by 2018. In 2016, a group called the Northern Alliance formed to continue fighting. This long history makes the current struggle very complex.

The fighting has caused a massive humanitarian crisis. By March 2023, the United Nations estimated 17.6 million people needed help. About 1.6 million people were internally displaced, meaning they fled their homes. Over 55,000 civilian buildings have been destroyed. More than 40,000 people fled to neighboring countries like Thailand, India, and Bangladesh.

In late 2023, the balance of power began to shift. Anti-SAC forces launched major offensives, such as Operation 1027. During this operation, forces seized the town of Laukkai. Another offensive, Operation 1111, besieged the state capital of Loikaw. The Three Brotherhood Alliance also took part in these attacks. By late 2023, the Tatmadaw faced issues with low morale and desertions. In February 2024, thousands of soldiers surrendered, including six generals.

Many specific towns have changed hands during the war. In August 2024, the MNDAA captured Lashio, a very large town.

In December 2024, the Arakan Army captured the Western Command headquarters in Ann. By March 2024, resistance forces had captured eight district-level towns. Control of the land is often divided and changes frequently. By October 2023, the Tatmadaw controlled under 40% of the country. However, they claimed to control two-thirds of the 330 townships.

The war affects many systems, including the economy and regional stability. The conflict has forced people to move across borders into other nations. This creates challenges for countries like Thailand and Bangladesh. The fighting also involves many different types of weapons and tactics. Some groups use homemade weapons, while the military uses aircraft and heavy artillery. Even after a brief ceasefire in early 2025, fighting continued in several states. The situation remains a major part of modern history in Southeast Asia.
