Inside every living thing is DNA. DNA holds the plans for how a body works. A mutagen is something that changes this DNA.

These changes are called mutations.

Some mutations happen on their own. This can happen when cells copy DNA.

Mutagens can be physical or chemical. Physical mutagens include light and radiation. X-rays are a type of radiation. In 1927, a man named Hermann Muller showed X-rays change DNA in fruit flies. Ultraviolet light from the sun can also cause changes.

Chemical mutagens can also change DNA. Some chemicals act directly on the DNA. Others become mutagens after the body breaks them down. These are called promutagens. For example, some parts of coal tar can cause cancer.

Sometimes, these changes lead to cancer. A carcinogen is a substance that can cause cancer. Not all mutagens are carcinogens, but many are. Scientists use a tool called the Ames test to find them. This test helps us see if a chemical might be harmful.
