In 1849, Claude-Étienne Minié invented the Minié ball. This was a bullet with an expanding skirt. When fired, the skirt spread out to fit the barrel tightly. This made the gun much more accurate over long distances.

Eventually, new guns like the Henry rifle and the Winchester rifle arrived. These were repeating rifles, which means they could fire many shots quickly. These new inventions finally ended the era of the musket.

Muskets are linked to many things we see in history books today. You might hear the phrase "lock, stock, and barrel." This refers to the three main parts of a musket.

They were designed specifically to penetrate heavy plate armor used by soldiers. As the need for heavy armor declined, the musket evolved into a more general term for shoulder-fired weapons.

To understand how a musket works, one must look at the loading process. Soldiers used paper cartridges to speed up this complex task. A cartridge was a pre-measured amount of black powder and ammunition wrapped in paper. To load, a musketeer would tear the paper open, often using his teeth. He poured some powder into the pan and the rest into the barrel. After adding the ammunition, he used a ramrod to push everything down the barrel. This method was much faster than measuring powder by hand for every single shot.

The firing mechanism, known as the lock, underwent many technological changes. Early muskets used matchlocks, which relied on a burning wick to ignite the powder. These were eventually replaced by flintlock mechanisms, which used a piece of stone to create sparks.

Later, percussion locks became the standard. In some regions, such as China and Japan, matchlocks remained in use until the 19th century. Inventors also added specific improvements to the lock over time. In 1750, a detent was added to help the sear. In 1770, a roller bearing was introduced to increase sparks. By 1780, waterproof pans were added to help the weapon function in wet conditions.

Different types of ammunition changed how effective these weapons were. For a long time, soldiers used round lead balls. However, in 1849, Claude-Étienne Minié invented the Minié ball.

This was a bullet-shaped projectile with an expanding skirt. When fired, the skirt expanded to fit the rifled barrel tightly. This allowed the rifled musket to be much more accurate. While a smoothbore musket was difficult to aim at distance, a rifled musket could hit targets several hundred yards away. During the American Civil War, combat ranges of 300 yards were common.

Muskets were accompanied by various specialized accessories to maintain them. If a lead ball became jammed in the barrel, a soldier used a ball puller. This tool worked like a corkscrew to unscrew the stuck ammunition.

Another tool was called a worm, used to clear debris like paper wadding from the barrel. Some worms were even sturdy enough to remove stuck ammunition. There were also specialized molds used for casting lead balls locally.

As armor became less common, the musket became more mobile. This mobility allowed musketeers to act as skirmishers or take cover behind walls. In England, the long barrels were even cut down to shorter lengths around 1630. This change helped soldiers move more quickly than the pikemen who fought alongside them.

Eventually, new technologies made the musket obsolete. The development of breech-loading firearms began in 1835 with Casimir Lefaucheux. These guns loaded from the back rather than the muzzle. Later, the 1860 Henry rifle and the 1866 Winchester rifle introduced repeating capabilities.

These rifles could fire multiple shots in quick succession. This rapid fire ended the era of the single-shot musket. The transition from smoothbore muskets to rifled muskets and finally to repeating rifles changed the face of combat forever.
