Musgrave Ranges

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Musgrave Ranges are a mountain range. They sit in central Australia. These mountains cross three states. They touch South Australia and the Northern Territory. They also reach into Western Australia. The range sits between two deserts. The Great Victoria Desert is to the south. The Gibson Desert is to the north.

Many peaks in the range are very tall. The highest peak is named Ngarutjaranya. The Yankunytjatjara people lived here first. Later, Pitjantjatjara people moved into the area. Today, many families live in Amata and Kaltjiti. Most of these families are Pitjantjatjara.

A law passed in 1981 gave land rights to the Pitjantjatjara people. This gave them ownership of the South Australian part. Some companies want to look for minerals in the ground. They may find gold, silver, or copper there. They might even find oil. Pitjantjatjara Elders want to find new jobs for their people. They look for ways to help the community grow.
