The building itself was designed in 1785 by Juan de Villanueva. King Charles III ordered it to be a Natural History Cabinet. However, King Ferdinand VII decided to make it a museum instead. It opened to the public for the first time in November 1819. It wanted to show that Spanish art was just as good as any other.

Many famous artists have works in the museum. Francisco Goya is the most represented artist in the collection.

The museum has even added art from closed museums like the Museo de la Trinidad. This helps the collection grow larger every year.

The museum is part of a special area in Madrid. It sits on the Paseo del Prado. This path is part of the "Golden Triangle of Art."
