A playback singer is someone who records songs for actors to use in movies. His voice became very important to many people. He was known as the "ghost voice" for famous actors like Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, and Dilip Kumar. This means that while the actors moved on screen, it was Mukesh's voice the audience heard. He sang about 1,300 songs during his long career. He focused on making each song high quality rather than just singing many songs quickly.

Mukesh's journey to fame began with a lot of practice and help from others. He was born in Delhi on July 22, 1923, into a large family of ten children. As a young man, he worked for the Department of Public Works in Delhi. While working, he experimented with recording his own voice to improve his skills. A relative named Motilal eventually noticed his talent at a wedding. Motilal took him to Bombay, which is now called Mumbai, for professional lessons. This move helped him start his very first acting and singing role in the film Nirdosh in 1941.

In the beginning, Mukesh did not have a style that was all his own. He was a huge fan of a singer named K. L. Saigal. Because of this, he used to imitate Saigal's way of singing. This was so accurate that Saigal once thought Mukesh was actually him! However, a music director named Naushad Ali helped him change. Naushad worked with Mukesh to help him move away from imitating others. This allowed Mukesh to create the unique singing style that made him a star.

Mukesh won many prestigious awards for his beautiful musical work. He won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1974. He earned this for his song "Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai" from the movie Rajnigandha. He also won three Filmfare Awards for songs like "Sab Kuch Seekha Humne." He worked very closely with many famous music directors. He recorded 133 songs for the team Shankar–Jaikishan and 99 songs for Kalyanji Anandji. These partnerships created some of the most popular music in India.

His music left a lasting mark on many different people. Even famous cricket players like Sunil Gavaskar and Bhagwath Chandrasekhar were big fans. Chandrasekhar would listen to Mukesh's songs while playing on the cricket pitch. Mukesh also had a personal life filled with both joy and hard work. He married Saral Trivedi in a temple on his 23rd birthday in 1946. They had five children together and stayed married for thirty years. Mukesh passed away in 1976 in Detroit, Michigan, while traveling for a concert. His songs continue to be loved by fans all over the world.
