His life reflects the complex political evolution of Nigeria. He moved from leading through military force to leading through the democratic process. This transition marks a significant chapter in West African history.

Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, located in modern-day Katsina State. He was the twenty-third child of Mallam Hardo Adamu, a Fula chieftain. After his father died when Buhari was four, Waziri Alhassan became his guardian. Buhari's early life included attending Qur'anic school and helping to rear cattle. He completed his secondary education in 1961 at Katsina Provincial Secondary School. He served as house captain and headboy during his time there.

In 1962, Buhari joined the Nigerian military at age 19. He was one of only 70 boys selected for the Nigerian Military Training College. He later traveled to England for officer cadet training at Mons Officer Cadet School. His military career involved many different roles and locations. He served as a Platoon Commander in Abeokuta in 1963. During the Nigerian Civil War, he was assigned to the 1st Division. He worked in various sectors, including the Awka sector, to protect food supplies.

Following the war, Buhari held several high-level administrative positions. From 1975 to 1976, he served as the Governor of the North-Eastern State. He then became the first Governor of Borno State. In 1976, General Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him Federal Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources. During this time, the government built 21 petroleum storage depots across Nigeria. A pipeline network was also constructed to connect various terminals and refineries. Despite these developments, allegations of missing funds arose later in his career.

In December 1983, Buhari was a leader in a military coup d'état. This event overthrew the Second Republic, which was a period of multi-party democracy. Buhari became the head of the military junta during a severe economic crisis. He believed the civilian government was corrupt and lacked discipline. To address this, he launched the War Against Indiscipline, or WAI. This program focused on anti-corruption and economic recovery through strict governance. His authoritarian style became known as Buharism.

Buhari's military rule ended on August 27, 1985, during a palace coup. General Ibrahim Babangida led this movement to remove him from power. After this period, Buhari transitioned into civilian politics. He ran for president in 2003, 2007, and 2011 with different political parties. In 2014, he became the candidate for the All Progressives Congress. In the 2015 general election, he defeated the incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan. This was the first time an incumbent president lost a re-election bid in Nigeria.
