Once the characters are positioned, ink is applied to the raised surfaces of the type. Finally, paper is pressed against the inked characters to transfer the marks. This method is much faster for alphabetic scripts than traditional woodblock printing.

Different materials have been used to create movable type throughout history. The earliest known system used ceramic materials, which are pieces of baked clay.

Later, inventors used copper to create metal movable type. For example, a 12th-century document from the Jin Dynasty used individual copper characters to print identifying codes on paper money. Other materials included wood, as seen in the work of the Yuan dynasty official Wang Zhen. In the 14th century, Korea utilized bronze alloys to print the Jikji in 1377.

The history of this technology begins in China during the Northern Song dynasty. Around 1040 AD, an inventor named Bi Sheng created the first movable type using porcelain. The scholar Shen Kuo recorded the technical details of this invention in his book, the Dream Pool Essays.

In 1193, the statesman Zhou Bida documented using clay characters to print his book, the Yutang Zaji. This book is the oldest surviving text printed with movable type. While some claimed ceramic type was too fragile, later records suggest fired clay was actually as tough as horn.

In Europe, the development of the printing press arrived around 1450. German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg invented a metal movable-type printing press during this period. He introduced innovations like casting type using a matrix and a hand mould. Gutenberg created his type pieces from a specific alloy of lead, tin, and antimony.

This specific metal mixture remained the industry standard for 550 years. The high quality and relatively low cost of the Gutenberg Bible in 1455 proved the superiority of this system.

In Mesopotamia, cylinder seals were rolled over wet clay to create impressions. Other precursors include the use of stamps on bricks in the cities of Uruk and Larsa. Even the Minoan Phaistos Disc from 1600 BC is studied as a possible early example of using reusable characters. In China, seals were used for centuries to stamp pottery and even religious items.

Before movable type, woodblock printing was a common method. This process involved sticking a hand-copied script onto a thick, smooth board. A carver would then cut away the parts of the board that were not part of the character. The remaining raised characters were then inked and pressed onto paper. While effective, woodblock printing was slow and required a lot of labor. It was also difficult to correct mistakes or store the large wooden plates for later use.
