It sits on the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture. This mountain range is very complex and has many peaks. Some people say there are as many as 36 peaks. The mountains get their heat from a magma chamber. This is a large pool of melted rock deep underground. The magma comes from the Chijiwa Caldera near Tachibana Bay.

In 1991, a dome grew in the crater of Fugen-dake. It grew just like a peach. As more lava pushed up, the dome would split or collapse. This caused pyroclastic flows. These are fast clouds of hot ash and gas.

This area has been active for millions of years. The oldest volcanic rocks are over 6 million years old. Long ago, the land sank below sea level. This helped the volcanic activity stay in one place. Over time, different peaks like No-dake and Myōken-dake formed. Fugen-dake has been the most active peak for 20,000 years. In 1663, its lava flows covered a large forest. Mount Unzen is a complex volcanic group located on the Shimabara Peninsula. This peninsula is in Nagasaki Prefecture on Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island.

Rather than being a single mountain, Unzen consists of many overlapping stratovolcanoes. Some counts suggest there are more than 20 mountains in the group. Different sources even list varying numbers of peaks, such as 24 or 36. The entire range towers over the sea and forms a massive volcanic complex. This area is significant because it shows how intense volcanic activity shapes the landscape over millions of years.

The volcanic activity at Unzen is powered by a specific underground mechanism. The various peaks derive their magma from the Chijiwa Caldera. This magma is supplied from a magma chamber located beneath Tachibana Bay, near Obama Onsen.

This supply of melted rock drives the eruptions that build the mountains. The geological structure of the region was influenced by crustal faulting. This faulting created a graben, which is a depressed block of the Earth's crust. This graben caused parts of the peninsula to subside by up to 1,000 meters below sea level. This subsidence likely caused the volcanic activity to become localized at this specific site.

Over millions of years, the Unzen complex has gone through many distinct stages. The oldest volcanic deposits in the region are more than 6 million years old. Between 2.5 and 0.5 million years ago, extensive eruptions occurred across the entire peninsula. During the first 200,000 years, the volcano grew rapidly into a very large cone. Between 500,000 and 400,000 years ago, eruptions changed to dacitic pumice flows and airfall deposits. From 400,000 to 300,000 years ago, large areas of pyroclastic flow and lahar deposits were laid down. Lahars are flows of volcanic debris and water. These deposits form the major volcanic fan surrounding the volcano.

Since 150,000 years ago, activity has centered around four main volcanic domes. These domes were built at different times and have different ages. The No-dake dome is between 70,000 and 150,000 years old. The Myōken-dake dome is between 25,000 and 40,000 years old. Fugen-dake is younger than 25,000 years old and has been the most active peak for the last 20,000 years. Finally, the Mayu-yama dome is much younger, at only 4,000 years old.

During the recent 1990–1995 eruption, a new peak called Heisei-Shinzan emerged. This new lava dome became the highest elevation in the group.

Mount Unzen has a history of devastating volcanic events. In 1792, a massive disaster occurred following an earthquake in November 1791. Eruptions began at the Jigokuato crater on February 10, 1792. On March 25, lava flowed down the northeastern part of Fugen-dake for 2 kilometers. Following a post-eruption earthquake, the east flank of the Mayu-yama dome collapsed. This caused a massive landslide into Ariake Bay. The resulting megatsunami killed an estimated 14,524 people. This remains the worst volcanic-related disaster in Japan's history.

The most recent period of intense activity occurred from 1990 to 1995. In November 1990, the volcano began with phreatic eruptions, which are steam-blasts. These eruptions ejected only vaporized hot water and ash. By May 1991, fresh lava began emerging from the crater. This lava was very viscous, meaning it was thick and slow-moving. Instead of flowing away, it formed a lava dome that grew like a peach.

As the dome grew, it would split and collapse under its own weight. These collapses created pyroclastic flows. These are clouds of volcanic gas and debris that travel at speeds of 100 km/h. On June 3, 1991, a violent eruption and a pyroclastic flow killed 43 people, including three volcanologists.
