A major geological event shaped the mountain's appearance thousands of years ago. The eastern flank experienced a catastrophic collapse. This created a massive landslide, similar to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. This event left a large depression known as Valle del Bove, or the Valley of the Ox. 
Humanity has long associated Etna with myth and mystery. The name "Etna" may come from the Greek word meaning "to burn." Other theories suggest it comes from a Phoenician word for "furnace" or "chimney." In Roman and Greek mythology, the god of blacksmithing, Vulcan or Hephaestus, was said to have his forge under the mountain. Greek myths also claim the monster Typhon was trapped beneath it by Zeus. Medieval legends even connected the volcano to King Arthur. Some stories claimed Arthur's kingdom was a subterranean realm located "within Etna."
