Ice Peak is another large volcano that is 2,710 meters high. The Spectrum Range reaches an elevation of 2,510 meters. The complex is located southeast of Telegraph Creek. It is also southwest of Dease Lake. Many streams like Mess Creek and Kakiddi Creek flow around it.

This volcanic system works through several different types of eruptions and structures. It includes stratovolcanoes, which are tall, cone-shaped mountains. It also contains shield volcanoes, which are broad and have gentle slopes. Other features include cinder cones and lava domes. These different forms were created during five distinct cycles of magmatic activity. This magma, or molten rock, moved through the earth over the last 7.5 million years. These cycles spanned four different geologic epochs. The eruptions produced 13 different geological formations made of various volcanic rocks.

Four central volcanoes dominate the landscape of the complex. Mount Edziza is the highest and is a large, ice-covered stratovolcano. Ice Peak is another major feature, standing at 2,710 meters. It is a composite stratovolcano that has been worn down into a steep, pyramidal peak. The Spectrum Range is a third major part, reaching 2,510 meters. It is a nearly circular dome that is more than 10 kilometers wide. Finally, Armadillo Peak represents the eroded remains of a small caldera. A caldera is a large crater formed when a volcano collapses.

Small cinder cones are scattered across the plateau in specific groups. The Desolation Lava Field on the northern slope of Mount Edziza contains several cones. These include the Eve, Storm, Moraine, Williams, Sleet, Twin, Sidas, and Triplex cones. On the southwestern flank of Ice Peak, the Snowshoe Lava Field holds five named cones. These are the Tennena Cone, Coffee Crater, Keda Cone, Cocoa Crater, and The Saucer. The Mess Lake Lava Field contains only one named cinder cone, called the Ash Pit. Other isolated cones, such as Nahta Cone and Kana Cone, sit at the edges of the complex.

Human history is closely tied to this volcanic land. Indigenous Tahltan people have lived adjacent to the MEVC for thousands of years. They used volcanic glass found here to create tools and weapons. This glass is known as obsidian. High-quality obsidian can be found specifically on Obsidian Ridge. Scientific interest in the area grew in the mid-20th century. Geological work has been carried out intermittently since at least the 1950s. The most detailed scientific studies were conducted during the 1960s.

Nature and climate shape the way the MEVC looks today. The area experiences warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Snow and ice remain on the highest volcanoes throughout the entire year. This ice forms an ice cap with several outlet glaciers. These glaciers stretch from the summits down to lower altitudes.

The complex is surrounded by many streams that drain the volcanic flanks. These include the Little Iskut River, Kakiddi Creek, the Klastline River, and Mess Creek. These waterways belong to the larger Stikine River watershed.

The MEVC is a vital part of the Boreal Mountains and Plateaus Ecoregion. This ecological region includes high plateaus and rugged mountains. In the valley bottoms, you can find forests of black and white spruce. Mid-slopes are often covered in birch, spruce, and willow trees. Animals like bears, moose, caribou, and sheep live in these habitats. While the area is mostly wild, it is also a large provincial park. Much of it can only be reached by aircraft or horse trails.
