Motif (narrative)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Stories use patterns to help us learn. A motif is a detail that repeats. It can be a sound or a color. It can also be a phrase.

A sound can be a motif. One play uses a flute sound. This sound feels like the countryside. A book uses a green light. This light is a motif too.

Some stories use many motifs. One play repeats words about blood. It also uses words about water. Actors even wash their hands to show a motif.

Motifs can connect different times. They can also show a mood. A film uses eyes as a motif. This helps us think about what is real.

Motifs are real things we can see. They help create big ideas. Do you see patterns in stories?
