It is a left tributary of the huge Danube river. This river gives its name to the historical region of Moravia. The river starts on the Králický Sněžník mountain. This mountain is in the north-eastern corner of the Pardubice Region. It sits near the border between the Czech Republic and Poland.

From there, the water flows in a southward direction. The river is quite long at 378 kilometers. About 263 kilometers of the river are in the Czech Republic. This makes it the third longest river in that country.

The river moves through many different types of land. Most of the river basin is made of flat plains. Only seven percent of the basin is made of mountains. The rest is made of highlands. As the river flows, it creates large lowlands. These include the Upper and Lower Morava Valleys. It also forms the Marchfeld in Austria and the Záhorie Lowland in Slovakia. Because the land is so flat, the river often curves. These curves are called meanders. Sometimes the river leaves behind curved lakes called oxbow lakes. The river is also a blackwater river, which is quite unusual. It eventually flows into the Danube near Devín Castle.

People have lived near the Morava for a very long time. Human settlements were found in the Austrian part 30,000 years ago. People began farming in the valley about 7,000 years ago. The river has also been used as a border for many centuries. It once marked the edge of the Carolingian Empire. Later, it was the border between Austria and Hungary. During the Cold War, it was part of the Iron Curtain.

In July 1997, heavy rain caused a very big flood. This flood affected the northern and eastern parts of the river basin.

Many towns and cities sit along the river's path. In the Czech Republic, you can find Olomouc and Kroměříž. Other cities include Otrokovice, Uherské Hradiště, Veselí nad Moravou, and Hodonín. The city of Brno is also in the river basin.

The river has many smaller rivers that flow into it. The longest one is the Thaya, which is 311 kilometers long. Other tributaries include the Bečva and the Myjava. By 2009, about 2.3 million people lived in the area the river drains. This area is known as the catchment area.

The Morava is a very special place for nature. It is one of the most diverse places in Europe. Scientists have found about 12,000 different species of living things there. This is second only to the Danube Delta. The river connects the Danube Valley to the plains of northern Europe. This helps both animals and humans move through the land. Some parts of the river were changed by people in the 20th century. However, people are now working hard to protect the natural ecosystem. They want to keep the river healthy for the future.

The river is the namesake for the historical region of Moravia in the Czech Republic. This river is a lowland river, meaning it flows mostly through flat areas. Its basin is composed of 51% plains and 35% highland. Only seven percent of the river basin consists of mountains.

The river begins its journey in the Králický Sněžník Mountains. This source is located in the north-eastern corner of the Pardubice Region. It sits near the border between the Czech Republic and Poland. From this high point, the water follows a general southward trajectory. The river travels a total length of 378 kilometers. Of this distance, 263 kilometers are located within the Czech Republic. This makes it the third longest river in that country.

As the Morava flows, it creates several distinct lowland areas. These include the Upper Morava Valley and the Lower Morava Valley. The river also forms the Marchfeld in Lower Austria and the Záhorie Lowland in Slovakia. These three areas are actually continuous parts of the larger Vienna Basin. The river is also categorized as a blackwater river. This is an unusual classification for a European river. The river's path is shaped by a weak slope. This low gradient causes the water to meander, or curve, across the flat plains. These movements often create oxbow lakes, which are U-shaped bodies of water.

Human history is deeply connected to the Morava's banks. Archaeological evidence shows human settlements existed in the Austrian section 30,000 years ago. Agriculture began in the Morava valley approximately 7,000 years ago. During the New Stone Age, fortified settlements began to appear. The river has also functioned as a long-standing political boundary. The lower part of the river marks one of the oldest national borders in continental Europe. It once served as the eastern boundary of the Carolingian Empire. Later, it separated the Duchy of Austria from the Kingdom of Hungary. During the Cold War, this section formed part of the Iron Curtain between Austria and Czechoslovakia.

The river basin supports a large and diverse population. As of 2009, the catchment area housed 2.3 million people. Many important Czech cities sit along its course. These include Olomouc, Kroměříž, Otrokovice, Uherské Hradiště, Veselí nad Moravou, and Hodonín.

Even the second largest Czech city, Brno, lies within the basin. The Morava receives water from many tributaries. The longest is the Thaya, which is 311 kilometers long. Other notable tributaries include the Bečva, the Myjava, and the Zaya. The river carries an average discharge rate of 115 cubic meters per second. This water is collected from a total drainage area of 35,700 square kilometers.

Nature thrives in the Morava's unique environment. The river creates vast floodplains that are highly biologically diverse. Scientists have identified approximately 12,000 different species in this area. This level of biodiversity is second only to the Danube Delta in Europe. The river acts as a vital link between the Danube Valley and northern European plains. However, human activity has impacted this ecosystem. In the 20th century, many parts of the river were regulated. This process caused a loss of natural inundation areas. Additionally, the basin faces challenges from industrial wastewater and nitrogen from agriculture.

Extreme weather can also impact the region. In July 1997, the Morava basin experienced catastrophic flooding. This was caused by heavy stratiform rain that lasted for several days. The floods specifically affected the northern and eastern parts of the basin.

Despite these challenges, the central river has kept much of its natural character. There are now conscious efforts to protect the ecosystem. These conservation projects aim to preserve the river's biological richness for the future. The river remains a complex system of water, land, and life.
