This administrative status began in 2004. The new provincial arrangement became fully active in the summer of 2009. Previously, Monza was a municipality within the province of Milan. Today, it is the third largest city in the Lombardy region. It serves as a vital economic and industrial hub for the Brianza area. The city supports major textile and publishing industries.

The geography of Monza is defined by the River Lambro. This river flows from north to south through the city. In the early 14th century, people created an artificial fork in the river. This branch is called the Lambretto. It was built for defensive purposes during the Middle Ages. The Lambretto rejoins the main Lambro as it exits the city to the south. Another artificial stream, the Canale Villoresi, was constructed in the late 19th century.

The climate is a sub-Mediterranean type common to the Po Valley. This means the city experiences warm summers and short, cool winters. Most precipitation occurs during the autumn months. Despite seasonal changes, the area rarely suffers from drought.

Human history in Monza dates back to the Bronze Age. Archaeologists discovered funerary urns in the late 19th century. These finds suggest people lived in pile dwelling settlements near rivers and marshes. During the Roman Empire, the settlement was known as Modicia. A Gallo-Celtic tribe likely founded the original village on the Lambro. You can still see the ruins of a Roman bridge called Ponte d'Arena. This bridge is located near the modern Ponte dei Leoni.

The Middle Ages brought great importance to the city. Queen Theodelinda chose Monza as her summer residence in 595. Legend says she founded an oraculum after dreaming of a dove. The Latin word "modo," meaning "here," is part of the city's legendary name. Later, Berengar I of Italy used Monza as his headquarters. He provided many works to the Monza Cathedral. In the 12th century, the population reached about 7,000 inhabitants. During this time, agriculture and crafts were the primary occupations.

Monza was often a site of political struggle. The city frequently vied for independence from Milan. In 1325, Galeazzo I Visconti began building new defenses. This included a castle and a tall tower used as a jail. The city also saw significant conflict during the 14th and 17th centuries. In 1527, a mine explosion partially destroyed the Castle of Monza. The city also faced demographic crises due to the plague in 1576 and 1630. These events shaped the urban layout and the local economy.

The 18th and 19th centuries introduced new architectural and political shifts. Empress Maria Theresa built the Royal Villa of Monza in the late 1700s. Architect Giuseppe Piermarini designed the villa for her son, Ferdinand. This building was intended to connect Monza to Vienna and Milan. During the Napoleonic era, the city received the title of Imperial City. In 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte used the famous Iron Crown in Milan. He famously stated that God gave it to him.
