Reproduction in monocots often involves very specific flower structures. Most monocot flowers are trimerous, meaning their parts come in multiples of three. You might see three petals, three sepals, or six stamens. In many species, the petals and sepals look identical and are called tepals. These flowers are often showy to attract animals for pollination, a process called zoophily. About two-thirds of monocots rely on insects to move their pollen. They use bright colors or sweet fragrances to signal to these pollinators. Some plants even use special structures called semaphylls to help with this signaling.
