Monochromacy

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most people see a world full of color. This is because of tiny parts in the eye called cones. Most humans have three types of cones. These cones help the brain see many colors. But some people and animals have monochromacy. This means they only see light and dark. They see the world in shades of grey.

In humans, this can happen from birth. It can also happen from a disease. One kind is called rod monochromacy. In this case, the cones do not work. The person must rely on rods. Rods are parts of the eye that see in dim light. People with this condition see only grey. They may also find bright light hard to look at.

Another kind is cone monochromacy. This happens when only one type of cone works. A person might see patterns well in the light. But they still cannot see different colors.

Some animals see this way too. Many sea animals like whales and dolphins are monochromats. Owl monkeys also see in grey. This often happens to animals that live in dark places. They do not need to see colors to survive.
