The Mongols are an ethnic group. Many live in Mongolia and China. They also live in parts of Russia.
Long ago, many different tribes lived on the plains. Some were called the Xianbei. Others were called the Khitan. The Khitan formed a ruling family called the Liao dynasty.
In the 1200s, things changed. A leader named Genghis Khan united many tribes. He brought different Mongolic-speaking groups together. This created the Mongol Empire.

The Mongols are a large group of people with a shared history. They are an ethnic group from East Asia. Most Mongols live in Mongolia and China. You can also find them in parts of Russia, like Buryatia and Kalmykia.
Many different tribes lived on the plains long ago. Some people believe their ancestors were the Donghu. The Donghu lived in eastern Mongolia and Manchuria. Later, groups like the Xianbei and the Wuhuan became important. The Xianbei were a nomadic people with a strong military. They had a leader named Tanshihuai who ruled from 156 to 181.
History shows how these groups changed over time. After the Liao dynasty fell, the Khamag Mongols became a top tribe. However, wars with the Jin dynasty and the Tatars made them weaker.

The Mongol Empire grew to be incredibly huge. It spread across much of Eurasia.

Even though the big empire broke up, the people remained. The Mongols kept their unique identity through the years. They still live in the same regions today. You can see their culture in their homes and traditions. Many still live in a special tent called a ger.
The Mongols are a large East Asian ethnic group. They share a common heritage and ethnic identity. Most Mongols live in the Mongol heartland. This area includes Mongolia and parts of China. They also live in the Russian republics of Buryatia and Kalmykia.
The origins of the Mongolic peoples are complex. Some scholars link their development to the expansion of Ancient Northeast Asians. Their lifestyle is often linked to Western Steppe Herders. This may have happened through cultural transmission. Some historical texts connect Mongolic ancestry to the Donghu. The Donghu were a nomadic confederation. They lived in eastern Mongolia and Manchuria. They lived near the Xiongnu, who were a multi-ethnic group. The Donghu are mentioned in Chinese records as early as 699–632 BCE.
Several important groups followed the Donghu in history. The Xianbei were part of the Donghu confederation. They were a nomadic people with a formidable military. A leader named Tanshihuai ruled them from 156 to 181.
The Khitan people established the Liao dynasty. A leader named Abaoji founded this dynasty in 916. The Liao ruled until 1125. After the Liao fell, the Khamag Mongols became a leading tribe. However, wars with the Jin dynasty and the Tatars weakened them.
The Mongol Empire became one of the largest in history. It stretched across almost all of Eurasia.

Even after the empire broke up, the Mongols remained influential. Many Mongolic peoples settled in new areas. Some adopted Turkic cultures after the empire split. However, their distinct identity stayed strong. You can still see their culture in their traditional homes. These are called gers.
The legacy of the Mongols is seen in many fields today. Their history is studied through DNA and ancient texts. For example, DNA from Avars in Hungary suggests they may have come from Mongolia.
