Mohammed's path to the throne began with a very structured and rigorous education.
His higher education focused heavily on law and international relations. Mohammed earned a bachelor's degree in law from Mohammed V University in 1985. He later moved to France to pursue advanced studies at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis. In 1993, he obtained a PhD in law with a thesis regarding EEC-Maghreb relations. During this time, he also gained military experience. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1994 and served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Moroccan Army.
When he ascended the throne on July 23, 1999, Mohammed VI introduced several major reforms. He promised to address poverty, corruption, and human rights. One of his earliest significant actions was changing the family code, known as the Mudawana, in 2004. This reform granted women more legal rights and power within Moroccan society. He also established the Equity and Reconciliation Commission to research human rights violations that occurred during his father's reign.
In 2011, Morocco experienced significant political unrest known as the Arab Spring. Protesters expressed discontent regarding the economy and government corruption. In response to these demonstrations, the King proposed a new constitution to redistribute certain powers.
Under the new constitutional framework, the role of the monarchy changed in specific ways. While the King remains the head of the armed forces and religious matters, the judiciary gained greater independence. The King is no longer described as "sacred or holy," though his person remains inviolable.
On the global stage, Mohammed VI has worked to diversify Morocco's international connections. He has maintained strong ties with the United States and the European Union while expanding relations with China.
Beyond politics, the King is involved in the nation's economic landscape. He maintains vast business holdings that span several different economic sectors in Morocco.
