Jafari joined the Revolutionary Guard in 1981. This is a large military group in Iran. He fought in the Iran-Iraq War. Later, he studied new ways to fight. He focused on asymmetric warfare. This means using smart plans to fight a bigger enemy. He also led a group to study defense plans.

Jafari was the leader of the Guard from 2007 to 2019. He was chosen by the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. During his time, he was in charge of many things. He oversaw groups that watched over media and speech. This led to the arrest of many journalists and activists. Some countries, like the U.S., put sanctions on him. These are rules that limit trade with a person. They did this because of his work and human rights concerns.
