Salah's career began with intense dedication in his home country. He played for local youth teams called Ittihad Basyoun and Othmason Tanta. At age 14, he joined the Al-Mokawloon Al Arab youth team. A scout discovered him by chance while watching another player. Salah faced many challenges to reach his goals. He often missed school to travel three hours to training. His muscles were not fully formed due to his young age. Because of this, he required a special diet and training program. He made his professional debut on May 3, 2010. Early on, he struggled to score goals for his team. He sometimes cried in the dressing room after matches. However, his manager, Mohamed Radwan, said this only motivated him to improve.

His move to Europe began with the Swiss club Basel in 2012.

Basel noticed him after he scored twice for Egypt's under-23 team in a friendly. Salah signed a four-year contract with the club in April 2012. He initially struggled because he could not speak the local language. Despite this, he helped Basel win the 2012–13 Swiss Super League title. He also scored important goals in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. During the 2013–14 season, he helped Basel win another league title. He played 79 total games for the club and scored 20 goals. In 2014, Chelsea signed him for a reported fee of £11 million.

Salah's time in England and Italy involved significant transitions. At Chelsea, he was the first Egyptian to sign for the London club. However, he received limited playing time during the 2014–15 season. He was even criticized by manager José Mourinho after a poor performance. To gain more experience, he went on loan to the Italian club Fiorentina.
