For his distinguished service, he was awarded the title of Bey. He also received the first military star of Fuad. Eventually, he became the director of the Egyptian Military Academy. This position placed him in contact with many rising military leaders.

At the military academy, Naguib joined the Free Officers Movement. This group consisted of nationalist army officers under the age of 35. They were veterans of various nationalist uprisings and the 1948 war. The group opposed the presence of British military personnel in Egypt and Sudan. They also believed King Farouk was corrupt and incompetent. Gamal Abdel Nasser originally led this movement. Nasser realized the movement needed a respected, older officer to gain credibility. He invited Naguib to assume leadership. This decision strengthened the movement but also created future friction. The younger officers viewed Naguib as a symbolic figurehead rather than a decision-maker.

On July 23, 1952, the Free Officers launched a coup d'état.

Foreign media often called him the first native Egyptian ruler since the Roman era. Naguib disagreed with this label. He believed all Egyptians, regardless of ancestry, were part of the nation. He viewed his presidency as a sacred burden. He felt he was the first leader raised from the ranks of the common people. He took great pride in this connection to the Egyptian citizenry.

However, Naguib's presidency ended due to internal power struggles.

He began to distance himself from the Revolutionary Command Council's land reform decrees. He also sought closer ties with political groups like the Wafd and the Muslim Brotherhood. This caused conflict with Gamal Abdel Nasser. Nasser accused Naguib of supporting outlawed groups and having dictatorial ambitions. A struggle for control of the military followed. In November 1954, Nasser forced Naguib to resign. Naguib was placed under informal house arrest in a Cairo villa. He remained there until President Anwar Sadat released him in 1971.
