The city sits right on the Atlantic Coast. It is located very near the Namib Desert. This makes the area feel dry with desert plants. The weather is often cool for a desert place. A cold ocean current called the Benguela Current flows nearby. This current keeps the air from getting too hot. In July and August, temperatures can fall below 18 °C.

The city has a very long and interesting history. Portuguese explorers first looked at this area in 1785. They named the local bay Moçâmedes to honor a man named Baron Moçâmedes. The city was officially founded in 1840 by the Portuguese.

At first, people built a factory and a fort at Ponta Negra. Many settlers came from places like Madeira and Brazil. In the 1850s, many German colonists also moved there. The city even changed its name to Namibe for a while. This name change lasted from 1985 until 2016.

Moçâmedes grew into a very important place for fishing. By the 1960s, there were 143 fishing boats in the water. Many factories were built to process the fish caught there. The city also became a major spot for mining. Between 1966 and 1967, a large terminal was built at Saco. This terminal is 12 km north of the city. It was built to help move iron ore from a mine in Cassinga.

A long 300 km railway was also built to help.

Today, many different ways help people travel to and from the city. Moçâmedes is one of the three biggest seaports in Angola. The Moçâmedes Railway ends right at the city. This train line was changed to a wider track in the 1950s. You can also reach the city by plane. The Namibe Airport is about 7 km south of the city. There is also an older airport called Yuri Gagarin nearby. It is only about 1.7 km from the center.

There are many things for people to do and see. Tourism is becoming a very important job for the city. Visitors might travel to see the Iona National Park. This park is about 200 km away from the city. It is the oldest and largest national park in Angola. It covers a huge area of 15,150 km2. The city is also a place for sports fans. In 2013, the city helped host a huge roller hockey world cup. This was the first time such an event happened in Africa.

The climate in Moçâmedes is classified as a hot desert climate, or BWh. This classification describes regions that are very dry and hot. However, the city experiences a subtropical effect due to local ocean currents. The Benguela Current flows northward along the coast. This current brings cooler water toward the land. It has a cooling effect on the local air. Because of this, temperatures in July and August often fall below 18 °C.

The history of the area began with Portuguese exploration in 1785. Luís Cândido Cordeiro Pinheiro Furtado claimed the land for Portugal. He was sent by the governor-general, Baron Moçâmedes. The Portuguese also sent an overland expedition led by Gregório José Mendes. They named the local bay Moçâmedes to honor the baron. In 1839, Admiral Noronha led an expedition to subdue local chiefs. The Portuguese colonial administration officially founded the city in 1840.

Early settlement shaped the character of the growing city. A factory was established in 1840. A fort was also built at Ponta Negra that same year. Many Portuguese settlers arrived from Madeira and Brazil. In the 1850s, the government helped German colonists move there. The city was known as Namibe between 1985 and 2016. It has since returned to its name, Moçâmedes. The city grew significantly as a major fishing port. By the 1960s, it hosted 143 fishing boats and several processing factories.

Industrial development transformed the local economy in the mid-1960s. A major iron ore terminal was built at Saco. Saco is a bay located 12 km north of Moçâmedes. This terminal served the iron ore mine at Cassinga. To move the ore, a 300 km railway was commissioned. The German company Krupp worked on the mine and railway. The Portuguese company SETH built the modern harbour terminal.

In 1967, the first ore carrier docked at the terminal. This carrier carried 250,000 tons of ore.

Moçâmedes is a critical center for transportation in Angola. It is one of the country's three major seaports. The Moçâmedes Railway ends at the city. This railway line used a 600mm gauge originally. It was later converted to a 1067mm gauge in the 1950s. Air travel is also available through two nearby locations. The Namibe Airport is about 7 km south of the city. The old Yuri Gagarin airport is only 1.7 km from the center.

Tourism and culture provide other important connections to the world. The city is near the Iona National Park. This is Angola's oldest and largest national park. It was proclaimed a reserve in 1937. It became a national park in 1964. The park covers a vast area of 15,150 km2.

The city also has religious significance. The Sé Catedral de São Pedro is a major cathedral. It is the seat for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Namibe. This diocese was established in 2009. In 2013, the city helped host the FIRS Men's Roller Hockey World Cup. This was the first time a roller hockey World Cup was held in Africa.
