Mithraism was a religion in the Roman Empire. It focused on a god named Mithras.

Many Roman soldiers followed this faith. It was popular from the 1st to the 4th century.

Followers met in special underground temples. These temples were called mithraea. They often looked like caves.

People in the group had seven levels. They also shared special meals together. They called themselves "those united by the handshake."

Most of what we know comes from art. We do not have any of their books.

One common scene shows Mithras killing a bull. This is called a tauroctony. Other art shows Mithras being born from a rock. Some art shows him sharing a meal with the sun god, Sol.

Archaeologists have found about 420 sites. They found many objects and monuments. There were likely 680 temples in the city of Rome alone. In the 4th century, the religion faced hard times. It was stopped by the end of that century.
