After India became independent in 1947, his rule began to change. He wanted Hyderabad to stay an independent state. However, the Indian Army moved in during 1948. This ended his time as the Nizam.

As a leader, he was known as the "Architect of modern Hyderabad." He spent up to 11% of his budget on education. In 1918, he issued a decree to create Osmania University. This was the first university to use Urdu as the language of instruction.

He also made primary education free for the poor. He built many important buildings like the Hyderabad High Court. He also built the Osmania General Hospital to serve the public.

The Nizam worked hard to protect his people from natural disasters. A major flood hit the city in 1908. This event killed an estimated 50,000 people. To prevent future flooding, he built two large reservoirs. These were called Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar.

He also built the Nizam Sagar Dam in 1923. This dam was built across the Manjira River. It remains the oldest dam in the state.

His political power changed after India gained independence in 1947. The Nizam wanted Hyderabad to remain an independent state. He also considered joining Pakistan. However, his power weakened due to the Telangana Rebellion. A militia called the Razakars also rose to power. In 1948, the Indian Army invaded and annexed Hyderabad.

This ended his rule as the Nizam.

Even after his reign ended, he continued to help society. He served as the Rajpramukh from 1950 to 1956. He started the Nizam Orthopedic Hospital in 1951. He leased this hospital to the government for only one rupee per month. He also donated land to the Bhoodan movement. This movement helped redistribute land to farmers who had none.
