Born on March 3, 1839, in Navsari, he belonged to a Parsi family of priests. Despite this religious tradition, he chose to become a businessman. He eventually founded the Tata Group, which became India's largest conglomerate. His vision helped transform India from an importer of goods into a manufacturing power. He is often remembered for his massive charitable contributions to society.

Tata's journey into business began with a formal Western education. His parents noticed his talent for mental arithmetic at a young age. He moved to Mumbai to attend Elphinstone College. There, he graduated as a "Green Scholar," which was the equivalent of a graduate.

While still a student, he married Hirabai Daboo. After graduating in 1858, he joined his father's export-trading firm. This firm established strong branches in Japan, China, Europe, and the United States.

His business strategy often relied on observing global market shifts. During a trip to China to learn about the opium trade, he noticed the booming cotton industry. This observation led him to found his own trading company in 1868 with 21,000 in capital. In 1869, he purchased a bankrupt oil mill in Chinchpokli. He converted this facility into the Alexandra Mill, a cotton mill. He later expanded into textiles by founding the Central India Spinning, Weaving, and Manufacturing Company in Nagpur. Although people in Mumbai criticized his choice of location, Tata was focused on long-term industrial growth.

Tata was a pioneer in bringing high-tech industrial processes to India. He purchased the Advance Mills in Ahmedabad, which utilized some of the most advanced technology of that era. He also aimed to improve the quality of Indian textiles to compete with Manchester, England. To do this, he experimented with cotton cultivation methods used by Egyptian farmers. He sought to produce softer, finer cloth to reduce the need for foreign imports. He was also the first to introduce the ring spindle into his mills. This new technology replaced the older throstle machines used by other manufacturers.

Only the hotel was completed during his lifetime. The Taj Mahal Hotel opened at the Colaba waterfront in Mumbai on December 3, 1903. It was a landmark achievement because it was India's first hotel to use electricity.

His impact on the economy was profound and continues through his descendants. His sons, Dorabji and Ratanji Tata, carried on the work of the Tata Group. Tata Steel, formerly known as TISCO, became India's largest steel company. After acquiring the Corus Group, it became the fifth-largest steel company in the world. It now produces 28 million tonnes of steel every year. The city of Jamshedpur was even named in his honor to recognize his industrial legacy.
