MIPS architecture

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

MIPS is a set of rules for computer chips. These rules are called an instruction set architecture. It tells the chip how to follow commands. MIPS was first made in 1985. It helped many machines work fast. One famous use was in the Nintendo 64 game console. It also helped power the PlayStation 2.

MIPS uses special parts called coprocessors. A coprocessor is an extra helper for the main chip. For example, one helper can do math for 3D graphics. This makes games look very real. The rules also have different versions. Some versions use 32-bit math. Other versions use 64-bit math. This allows the chip to handle much bigger numbers.

Many people study MIPS in school. It helped shape how other chips work today. In 2021, the makers of MIPS stopped making new versions. They are moving to a new set of rules called RISC-V. Even so, some companies still use MIPS today. They make their own versions to keep it going.
