Yamasaki is best known for the original World Trade Center. These were two very tall towers in New York City. 
He used smart ways to build his large projects. For the World Trade Center, he used a special wall. This wall was made of concrete and clay. It kept water out while they dug deep into the ground. He also used a special elevator system. This system saved a lot of space for offices.

His career included many different kinds of projects. In 1955, he designed the Pruitt–Igoe housing project in St. Louis. He also designed the Pacific Science Center for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. This building had beautiful, lacy arches that made him very famous. 
Yamasaki had a very unique way of designing. He often used narrow windows on his buildings. He did this because he had a personal fear of heights. He also loved using pointed arches, which look like the Gothic style. Many of his buildings used these shapes for both looks and strength. Building massive skyscrapers requires solving complex engineering problems. For the World Trade Center, Yamasaki faced the challenge of soft soil near New York Harbor. To prevent flooding during excavation, his team used a slurry wall. This involved digging narrow trenches and filling them with a dense mixture of clay and water. 
Internal efficiency was another major goal for Yamasaki's tall towers. He developed a unique elevator system called a Skylobby. Instead of one large cluster of shafts, he created three separate, connected elevator systems. These systems served different zones of the building based on the floor selected. This innovation saved approximately 70% of the space usually required for traditional elevator shafts. The saved space was then repurposed for additional office areas.
To manage wind, Yamasaki and engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan used an external truss system. Most skyscrapers of that era used internal cross-bracing in the core. Yamasaki’s design used a network of vertical and horizontal structural elements on the exterior. This external support helped keep the lightweight steel and glass structures from swaying. It also reduced the need for large internal support pillars. This design allowed for vast, open office floors unimpeded by columns.

His later work showcased more decorative and personal styles. The Pacific Science Center in Seattle featured iconic, lacy decorative arches. 

His architectural legacy remains a subject of study in the field. While some critics at the time were skeptical of his massive towers, his technical innovations were significant. He designed structures ranging from synagogues to university campuses. His work at Wayne State University incorporated many of his characteristic motifs. These included elevated bases, geometric patterns, and the use of white marble. Even as modernism declined, Yamasaki's influence on large-scale urban design remained evident.
