He spent sixty years telling stories through movies. He was a very important part of the Czechoslovak New Wave. This was a movement of filmmakers in his home country. He also became a professor at Columbia University. There, he mentored many new directors. His work was so special that many of his films are in the National Film Registry. This is a place that keeps important films safe for history.

Making a film involves many different steps and people. Forman worked closely with people like cinematographer Miroslav Ondříček. He also studied screenwriting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Early in his career, he made a silent documentary called Semafor. Later, he made a documentary about singers called Audition. He often turned books or plays into movies. For example, he turned the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest into a famous film. He also turned a play called Amadeus into a movie.

Forman's life began in a very difficult way. He was born in Čáslav, Czechoslovakia.

He lost both of his parents when he was a young boy. During the war, his father was arrested for helping the Czech Resistance. His mother died in a concentration camp called Auschwitz. Forman later found out his biological father was actually an architect named Otto Kohn. He was raised by his uncles and family friends. These hard times happened while he was growing up in Europe.

He achieved great success after moving to the United States. In 1968, he had to leave his home country. He moved to New York to continue his work. He won two Academy Awards for Best Director. The first was for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975. The second was for the film Amadeus in 1984.
