Military doctrine is a set of ideas for an army. It helps a military decide how to use its people and tools. Doctrine answers big questions. It asks, "Who are we?" and "What do we do?" It also asks how to do those tasks.

There are three main types of doctrine. Offensive doctrine aims to attack an adversary. Defensive doctrine aims to stop an adversary. Deterrent doctrine aims to stop an adversary from even starting a fight. Different plans can change how countries act toward each other.

Many countries have their own unique plans. China uses ideas from old and new leaders. They view the military as part of a larger plan for society. India uses a plan called "Cold Start." This plan helps their forces move very quickly. Israel uses a plan based on its small size. They try to win wars quickly to stay safe. Germany has used a plan called Auftragstaktik. This allows leaders to make quick choices when things go wrong. These plans help soldiers work together as one team.
