After the war, Hungary changed a lot. The country lost much of its land. Horthy led a new army to help the government. Soon, he became the Regent of Hungary. A Regent is a person who rules for a king. He held this role from 1920 to 1944. 
Horthy made many difficult choices. In the 1930s, he joined an alliance with Nazi Germany. This led Hungary into World War II. During this time, many Jewish people in Hungary were treated very unfairly. Many were killed during the Holocaust.

Horthy's era was marked by the terrible violence of the Holocaust. Before the German occupation, 63,000 Jews were murdered in Hungary. In late 1944, the situation became even more catastrophic. 
The end of Horthy's rule came quickly after his attempt to leave the war. In October 1944, he announced an armistice with the Soviet Union. The Germans responded by forcing him to resign and placing him under arrest.
