He was a military officer and a diplomat who served under three different Romanov monarchs. These rulers were Empress Catherine II, Emperor Paul I, and Emperor Alexander I. Kutuzov is most famous for his role as commander-in-chief during the Patriotic War of 1812. In this conflict, he used attrition warfare to defeat the invading French forces led by Napoleon. Attrition warfare is a strategy where one side tries to wear down the enemy's strength over time. This method focuses on making the opponent lose resources and energy rather than seeking a single, decisive battle.

Kutuzov's early life prepared him for his high-ranking roles. He was born in Saint Petersburg on September 16, 1745. His father was a Lieutenant-General who served under Peter the Great. Because of his family's noble status, Kutuzov had contact with the imperial Romanov family from a young age. At age 12, he entered an elite military-engineering school as a cadet private. He was a highly intelligent student who mastered several languages. He became fluent in French, German, and English. Later, he also studied Polish, Swedish, and Turkish. These linguistic skills became very useful during his diplomatic career.

Much of Kutuzov's leadership style came from Alexander Suvorov. Suvorov was a famous commander who taught Kutuzov several important lessons. First, Suvorov believed that military orders should be simple, direct, and concise. Second, he taught that a commander must care deeply about the health and training of his soldiers. Third, he believed a leader should lead from the front to show bravery. Finally, Suvorov emphasized the importance of building close relationships with troops. Kutuzov adopted these ideas throughout his career. These methods helped him become a very popular leader among the common soldiers.

Kutuzov's life was marked by incredible physical resilience. During the First Russo-Turkish War, he was shot in the left temple while leading an attack in Alushta. The bullet passed through his head and exited near his right eye. He survived, but his right eye remained permanently twisted. He traveled to Berlin, Leyden, and London to seek medical care. In London, he studied the American Revolutionary War. He learned how General George Washington used attrition against the British. This reinforced his belief that a commander does not always need to win every battle to win a war. In 1788, he was shot in the same spot again. He survived this second serious injury as well.

The Napoleonic Wars brought Kutuzov his greatest challenges. In 1805, he fought at the Battle of Austerlitz. During this battle, he tried to convince Allied generals to wait for reinforcements. However, Emperor Alexander I believed waiting was cowardly. The Russians were forced to move off the strategic Pratzen Plateau. Napoleon seized this high ground and used his artillery to break the Allied lines. This resulted in over 27,000 Russian and Austrian casualties. Following this defeat, Kutuzov was tasked with organizing the army's retreat through Hungary and back to Russia.

In 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia, and Kutuzov was appointed commander-in-chief. He was very popular because he was Russian and cared for the troops' well-being. On September 7, 1812, the two massive armies met at the Battle of Borodino. The battle involved nearly 250,000 soldiers. The ratio of troops was about 1.1 French soldiers for every 1 Russian soldier. The battle was extremely costly for both sides. Napoleon's army suffered a pyrrhic victory, meaning the cost was almost too high to be useful. Nearly one-third of the French army was killed or wounded. While Russian losses were 50% higher than the French, the Russian army was not destroyed.

Kutuzov's strategic decisions eventually led to the French retreat. After Borodino, he was promoted to the rank of General Field Marshal. He was also given the victory title of "Smolensky" after the Battle of Krasnoi. This title literally means "of Smolensk." Emperor Alexander I wrote that Kutuzov would be remembered as one of Europe's most famous commanders. He also stated that Russia would never forget Kutuzov's worthiness. Today, his legacy is honored through many monuments. These include large monuments in Saint Petersburg and Smolensk. His life remains a key part of military history.
