Mikhail Gorbachev was a very important leader in the 20th century. He was the last leader of the Soviet Union. This was a huge country that included many different lands. He led the country from 1985 until it broke apart in 1991. 

His life started in a small place called Privolnoye. He was born on March 2, 1931. 

Later, Mikhail went to a famous school in Moscow. He studied law at Moscow State University. 
In 1985, Gorbachev became the top leader of the Soviet Union. He wanted to fix many problems in his country. He started a plan called glasnost, which means "openness." This gave people more freedom to speak and write. He also started perestroika to change how the economy worked. 

Even though he wanted to help, things became very difficult. Many countries in Eastern Europe changed their governments in 1989. Gorbachev decided not to use his army to stop them. Some people in his own party tried to take his power in 1991. This was called a coup, but it did not work. Still, the Soviet Union broke apart shortly after.

Gorbachev rose through the ranks of the Communist Party in Stavropol. He oversaw the construction of the Great Stavropol Canal. 
To fix the country, Gorbachev introduced several major policies. The first was glasnost, which means "openness." This policy allowed for more freedom of speech and a freer press. 
Gorbachev also worked to change international relations. He wanted to end the Cold War, a long period of tension between superpowers. 
Despite his efforts, the Soviet Union eventually collapsed. Nationalist feelings grew strong in many different republics. In August 1991, hardliners in the party tried to launch a coup against him. The coup failed, but the Soviet Union dissolved shortly after.
