Brezhnev led for a very long time. He was the boss from 1964 until 1982. He made the Soviet Union a strong military power. He also worked to keep peace with the United States.

However, his time as leader had hard parts too. The government became very strict. It did not allow many new ideas. This led to a time called the Era of Stagnation. During this time, it was hard to find goods to buy. Economic growth also slowed down. Brezhnev died in 1982.

He served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party for many years. This role made him one of the most important people in his country. His time in power lasted from 1964 until he died in 1982. This was a very long time for a leader to stay in charge. Only one other leader, Joseph Stalin, held power for a longer period. Brezhnev's leadership changed how the Soviet Union acted toward the rest of the world.

Brezhnev rose to power by working through many different levels of government. He started in small jobs and moved into the Communist Party. In 1964, he helped remove the previous leader, Nikita Khrushchev. At first, Brezhnev shared power with two other men named Kosygin and Podgorny. However, he slowly worked to become the main boss of the country. By 1969, he had become the most dominant figure in the Soviet leadership.

His early life was quite different from his later years as a leader.

He was born on December 19, 1906, in a place called Kamenskoye. His father worked with metal, which means he was part of the working class. During World War II, Brezhnev served in the Red Army. He worked as a political officer and rose to the rank of major general. These military years helped him build connections that would help his career later on.

During his rule, the Soviet Union became a very strong military power.

He worked to reach a balance of power with the United States. This effort was known as détente, which is a way to reduce tension. In the 1970s, some people felt the Soviet military was the strongest in the world. He also worked to keep control over countries in Eastern Europe. One big event happened in August 1968 when the Soviet Union moved into Czechoslovakia. This move was part of a process called normalization.

Even though the country was strong, many people faced hard times at home.

The government became much stricter about what people could say or do. This period was called the Era of Stagnation because things stopped growing quickly. It became harder for people to find the goods they needed to buy. Corruption also became a problem within the government during these years. Brezhnev died on November 10, 1982, and a new leader named Yuri Andropov took over.

He served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party from 1964 to 1982. This role made him the most powerful person in the country for nearly two decades. His long tenure was second only to Joseph Stalin in length. He also held the position of head of state at different times. Brezhnev's leadership shaped how the Soviet Union interacted with the world and its own people. His era is often studied because it changed the direction of Soviet history.

Brezhnev's rise to power followed a specific path through the party system. In 1964, he helped remove Nikita Khrushchev from leadership. At first, Brezhnev shared power in a group called a triumvirate. He worked alongside Alexei Kosygin and Nikolai Podgorny. Kosygin focused on the economy and détente, which is the easing of tension between nations. Podgorny focused on relations with Third World countries. Brezhnev focused on Eastern Europe and security issues. By 1969, he had maneuvered himself into the position of the top leader.

To maintain his control, Brezhnev used several different political methods. He utilized the party apparatus to promote his allies and remove his enemies.

He also moved into the arena of foreign policy to increase his influence. By 1977, he combined the roles of General Secretary and President of the Presidium. This allowed him to hold even more authority over the state. He also surrounded himself with old friends in high-level government posts. This created a system where his trusted associates held significant power.

Brezhnev's early life provided the foundation for his political career.

He was born in 1906 in Kamenskoye to a working-class family. His father was a metalworker named Ilya Yakovlevich Brezhnev. After joining the Communist Party in 1929, he worked in various technical and administrative roles. During World War II, he served in the Red Army. He rose to the rank of major general while serving as a political commissar. These years helped him build a network of supporters known as the "Dnipropetrovsk Mafia."

During his leadership, the Soviet Union achieved significant military strength.

He worked to reach nuclear parity, or equal strength, with the United States. He also pushed for détente to manage the Cold War more carefully. By the mid-1970s, some observers believed the Soviet Union was the strongest military power. The Soviet Union also expanded its influence in Africa and the Middle East. However, this strength came through massive arms buildups and military interventionism. One notable example was the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia to enforce "normalization."

This intervention in Czechoslovakia was a turning point for many people. The Soviet Union crushed the "Prague Spring" movement in August 1968. This movement had hoped for "socialism with a human face." The crackdown signaled that the government would not allow major reforms. Instead, the leadership chose to repress cultural dissent. The KGB, the Soviet secret police, worked to shield society from Western influences. They monitored intellectuals and controlled what people could say or hear.

Ultimately, Brezhnev's era is known as the Era of Stagnation. This term describes a period of declining economic growth and social problems. While the government was stable, it became very inflexible. Corruption became widespread within the country's leadership. It also became harder for citizens to find common consumer goods. After 1975, Brezhnev's own health began to decline rapidly. He died on November 10, 1982. His death led to the rise of Yuri Andropov and later Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev eventually criticized the inefficiency of the Brezhnev years.
