Brzezinski's career began in 1990 as an assistant at ABC's World News This Morning. She soon moved to a Fox affiliate in Hartford, Connecticut. There, she worked as an assignment and features editor before becoming a general assignments reporter. In 1992, she joined a CBS affiliate in the same city. She rose through the ranks to become a weekday morning anchor by 1995. In 1997, she transitioned to CBS News. She served there as a correspondent and an anchor for the overnight program, Up to the Minute. She also contributed to programs like CBS Sunday Morning and 60 Minutes.

One of the most significant moments in her career occurred in September 2001. Brzezinski was working as a desk correspondent for CBS News during the September 11 attacks. This role placed her in the center of major historical events. She served as a principal "Ground Zero" reporter during the morning of the attacks. She was broadcasting live from the scene when the South Tower collapsed. This experience established her as a major figure in broadcast journalism. After a short period working for MSNBC on the show HomePage, she eventually returned to MSNBC full-time in 2007.

Brzezinski's professional life has often been defined by her stance on news priorities. In 2007, she famously protested against "trivial journalism." During a broadcast of Morning Joe, she refused to read a report about Paris Hilton's release from jail. She believed the story was less important than news regarding Senator Richard Lugar and the Iraq War. In an on-air protest, she attempted to set a script on fire. She eventually tore up the script and ran another copy through a paper shredder. This incident became a popular example of the tension between hard news and entertainment news. She later expressed similar objections to reporting on celebrities like Lindsay Lohan.

Her tenure at MSNBC has also included high-profile political conflicts. During the 2016 presidential campaign, she faced criticism regarding her interviews with Donald Trump. In 2017, she made the decision to ban Trump spokesperson Kellyanne Conway from her show. Brzezinski stated she did not believe in presenting information that was not true. She and Scarborough also faced criticism from the former President. Trump frequently used social media to target her with insults. In 2020, Brzezinski spoke out against a conspiracy theory Trump posted regarding her husband. The tweet concerned the 2001 death of an intern named Lori Klausutis. Brzezinski called the remarks "sick" and addressed the impact on the deceased's family.

Brzezinski comes from a family with deep roots in international diplomacy and politics. She was born on May 2, 1967, in New York City. Her father was Zbigniew Brzezinski, a famous political scientist and diplomat. He served as the National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter. Her mother, Emilie Anna Benešová, was a Swiss-born sculptor of Czech descent. Her mother was the grandniece of Edvard Beneš, a former president of Czechoslovakia. Her brother, Mark Brzezinski, also served as a United States Ambassador to Sweden and Poland.
