Some tiny things can make us sick. Other tiny things are good. They help us make food. They can even make medicine. They help us stay well. It is amazing how they work!
Microbiology is the study of tiny living things. These are called microorganisms. They are so small you cannot see them with your eyes. 
People guessed these tiny things existed a long time ago. In ancient Rome, Varro warned about tiny creatures in the air. In the 1670s, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek used his own lenses to see them. He is called a father of microbiology. Later, Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch helped make this a real science. 
Microbes are not just germs that make us sick. Many microbes are very helpful. They help make food like cheese and bread.

They often use DNA sequence-based identification. For example, they use the 16S rRNA gene sequence to identify specific bacteria. This allows scientists to study the vast majority of microbes that cannot be grown in a lab.

Pasteur also developed pasteurization for food preservation and created vaccines for rabies and anthrax. 

Microbes are incredibly useful in industry and medicine. They are used in industrial fermentation to produce alcohol, vinegar, and dairy products. 
Microorganisms also have a profound connection to human health. Symbiotic microbial communities help humans by aiding digestion and producing vitamins. Some people consume probiotics to support their digestive systems. Research even suggests that certain non-pathogenic clostridia could help treat cancer by replicating within tumors. This shows that the microbial world is not just a source of disease, but a complex system deeply connected to all life.
