Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter was a legendary Dutch States Navy officer.
De Ruyter's career followed a steady path from apprentice to admiral. He was born on March 24, 1607, in Vlissingen, Zeeland. His father, Adriaen Michielszoon, was a seaman and a beer porter. At age 11, De Ruyter began seafaring as a boatswain's apprentice. This was the typical age for boys in Zeeland to start. In 1622, he served as a cannoneer in the Dutch army. He later joined the merchant fleet, working as a boatswain and chief mate. By age 30, he had become a merchant shipmaster.
His early years provided him with diverse maritime experiences. He traveled as a supercargo to the Mediterranean and the Barbary Coast. He also worked on whaling expeditions to Jan Mayen in the 1630s. In 1641, he served as a Schout-bij-nacht, or third in command, during the Portuguese Restoration War. He fought against a Spanish fleet off Cape St. Vincent during this time. After this, he spent a decade in prosperous merchant service. He sailed to Morocco, Brazil, and the West Indies. By 1651, he had saved enough money to retire to Vlissingen.
War forced De Ruyter out of retirement in 1652. The First Anglo-Dutch War began, and he accepted a command in the Dutch Navy. He initially served under Lieutenant Admiral Maarten Tromp. De Ruyter commanded a squadron of "director's ships," which were privately financed warships. His main task was to convoy merchant ships through the English Channel. In August 1652, he protected a convoy of sixty merchant ships. He led 21 warships and six fireships against an English fleet of 45 ships.
De Ruyter's fame grew through several major naval campaigns. In 1665, he was named lieutenant admiral at the start of the Second Anglo-Dutch War. He fought the intense Four Days' Battle in 1666 in the southern North Sea.
During the Third Anglo-Dutch War, De Ruyter defended the Dutch coast from invasion. He fought at the battles of Solebay in 1672 and Schooneveld in 1673. He also commanded during the Battle of Texel in 1673.
De Ruyter met a tragic end while still on active duty. In 1676, he fought at the Battle of Augusta off the coast of Sicily. During this battle, he was fatally wounded by a cannonball.
