DeBakey used many clever ways to fix the human body. One major thing he did was create new parts for blood vessels. These parts are called grafts. He needed a strong material to make them. He found a material called Dacron at a department store. He used his wife's sewing machine to make the first grafts.

He also made a special tool called a roller pump. This pump helped move blood from one person to another. This idea later became part of the heart-lung machine.

His journey into medicine began a long time ago. He was born in 1908 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. His parents moved to the United States from Lebanon. As a boy, he helped in his father's drug store. This is where he first met doctors. He also learned how to sew and knit from his mother. He studied at Tulane University for many years. He earned his medical degree there in 1932. He even studied in France and Germany to learn more.

DeBakey did a lot of important work during World War II. He worked for the US Army in a special medical division. He helped make sure wounded soldiers received the care they needed. After the war, he helped start the Veterans Administration. This group helps take care of people who served in the military. Later, he joined the Baylor College of Medicine in 1948. He stayed there for many decades. He served as the president and the chancellor of the college.
