He also developed methods to repair aortic dissections, where the layers of the artery wall tear apart. In 1953, he performed the first successful carotid endarterectomy, a procedure to clear the carotid artery. He also pioneered patch-graft angioplasty in 1958 to prevent arteries from narrowing after surgery. These methods allowed surgeons to restore proper blood flow to vital organs.
DeBakey's medical journey began in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1908. He was the eldest of five children born to Lebanese immigrants. His father ran a drug store where Michael first encountered physicians. This experience inspired him to pursue medicine. He attended Tulane University for both his undergraduate and medical studies.
During World War II, DeBakey served in the U.S. Army's Surgical Consultants Division. He worked within the Office of the Surgeon General to support medical efforts during the conflict. His contributions earned him some of the highest honors in the United States. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969. In 1987, he was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Ronald Reagan.
