DeBakey's most famous innovations involved the mechanics of blood flow and vessel repair. During his time at Tulane University, he developed a version of the roller pump. This device used rubber tubing to move blood continuously from one person to another. This invention eventually became a vital component of the heart–lung machine. Later, he focused on creating prosthetic vascular substitutes, which are artificial tubes used to replace damaged blood vessels.

He used a material called Dacron, a type of polyethylene terephthalate, to create these grafts. To make the first ones, he even used his wife's sewing machine. He later worked with researchers to build a specialized knitting machine to manufacture these grafts more efficiently.

His surgical techniques addressed several specific, dangerous medical conditions. One major area was the treatment of aortic aneurysms, which are dangerous bulges in the body's main artery. He also developed methods to repair aortic dissections, where the layers of the artery wall tear apart. In 1953, he performed the first successful carotid endarterectomy, a procedure to clear the carotid artery. He also pioneered patch-graft angioplasty in 1958 to prevent arteries from narrowing after surgery. These methods allowed surgeons to restore proper blood flow to vital organs.

DeBakey's medical journey began in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1908. He was the eldest of five children born to Lebanese immigrants. His father ran a drug store where Michael first encountered physicians. This experience inspired him to pursue medicine. He attended Tulane University for both his undergraduate and medical studies.
