Some metro areas have one main city. For example, Paris is a central city in its area. Other areas have many cities that are all important. The Dallas–Fort Worth area in the United States has eight main cities. In some places, people live in a commuter belt. This is a zone of towns near the big city. People often travel from these towns to the center for work.

Metro areas can be very big. The New York metro area is one of the largest in the world.

In South Africa, the Greater Johannesburg area has over 9.6 million people. In Japan, the Greater Tokyo Area was once the most crowded metro area. These large regions help many people live and work together.

A metropolitan area, often called a "metro," is a large region. It is made of a busy urban center and the land around it.

These areas are all connected in many ways. They share the same jobs, shops, and houses. People also use the same roads and train networks to move around. This connection makes the whole region work together as one unit.

Metro areas can work in different ways. Some have one main central city that acts as the heart. The Paris metropolitan area is a good example of this. Other areas have many important cities that are almost equal. For instance, the Dallas–Fort Worth area in the United States has eight main cities. Some people live in a "commuter belt" far from the center. These people travel to the main city every day for work.

Different countries have their own ways of defining these regions. In India, a metropolitan city must have more than one million people. In China, a new rule from 2019 helps define them. These areas are often within a one-hour travel time from a large city. In the United States, they are often grouped by counties. This helps the government understand how people live and move. These rules help planners manage big groups of people.

Some metro areas are truly enormous. The New York metropolitan area is one of the largest in the world.

Metropolitan areas are important for the world economy. They are places where many people find jobs in service sectors. They are also important for trade between different places. Scientists even use a special system called the Urban Metric System to study them. This system looks at how people and jobs pull others toward them. It helps us see if an area is a small city or a huge global system.

A metropolitan area, frequently called a "metro," is a large and complex region. It consists of a densely populated urban agglomeration and its surrounding territories. These territories are not just random land near a city. Instead, they are closely tied to the urban center. They share vital systems like industries, commercial areas, and housing. They also rely on the same transport networks and infrastructure to function.

Because of these connections, metropolitan areas have become essential economic and political regions.

These regions function through a high degree of integration between different parts. A metropolitan area combines an urban center with contiguous built-up areas. These outlying zones are often called a commuter belt. People in these belts often travel into the center for employment or commerce. The connection can even extend beyond local political boundaries. For example, East Hampton on Long Island is considered part of the New York metropolitan area. This shows how economic ties can cross different jurisdictions.

Metropolitan areas can take several different structural forms. Some are anchored by a single, dominant central city. The Paris metropolitan area is a classic example of this single-center model. Other areas are polycentric, meaning they have multiple centers. These centers may be equal or close to equal in importance. The Dallas–Fort Worth area in the United States is such an example, containing eight principal cities. There are also polycentric areas where urban centers are not connected by continuous development.

Different nations use different rules to define these regions. In the United States, metropolitan statistical areas are often delineated around a core based statistical area. This includes a central urban area and its outlying counties. In India, a metropolitan city is defined by having a population over one million. In China, a 2019 guideline defines a metropolitan area within a megalopolis. This area is usually within a one-hour commute of a leading megacity. In Turkey, the term refers to a specific municipal government structure for provinces with over 750,000 residents.

Because definitions vary so much, scientists have developed new ways to study them. The Urban Metric System, or UMS, was conceived to fix the problem of inconsistent data. UMS uses vector field calculations to understand urban limits. It assumes that inhabitants and jobs exert an attractive force and a repulsive force. The net force is calculated based on the distance between these points. This system allows for a consistent way to compare different population and job distributions.

The UMS identifies many distinct stages of urban development. It starts with a central city, where the attractive force equals the repulsive force at 10 km. As the area grows, it becomes an agglomeration at 20 km. It can then progress to a metropolis at 40 km and a patropolis at 80 km. Even larger scales exist, such as a megalopolis at 160 km. The system reaches up to a world system, which covers a distance of 5,120 km. These stages help researchers categorize the scale of human settlement.

Metropolitan areas are massive in scale and population. The New York metropolitan area is one of the largest in the world. In South Africa, the Greater Johannesburg metropolitan area had over 9.6 million people in 2011. This was much larger than its core municipal city, which had about 957,441 people. In Japan, the Greater Tokyo Area was formerly the most populous metropolitan area on Earth. Looking at city lights from space highlights the immense size of these human clusters.

These regions are vital to the global economy and social systems. Macroeconomics views metropolitan areas as significant trade regions. They are characterized by a high concentration of service sector labor and enterprises. They can even be part of a much larger structure called a megalopolis. As social and economic institutions continue to change, these areas will likely continue to evolve. They remain the primary hubs where people, jobs, and resources intersect on a massive scale.
