Some experts believe its name comes from a word for indigo. In the 1500s, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Luzon. It was a walled and fortified city during that time. The ruling class used the Malay language for foreign business. Many nearby kingdoms knew about its trade. Even places in China and Japan knew of it.

Things changed when the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. After a battle in 1570, the Spanish built a new walled city.

This walled city became the capital of the Spanish East Indies. Later, the Manila galleon ships sailed across the Pacific Ocean. They brought goods and culture between Asia and Mexico. In 1901, during American rule, much of the area became part of the province of Rizal. Eventually, the modern region we see today began to take shape.

Experts suggest the name comes from the Sanskrit word for indigo. At that time, Manila was the capital of the Kingdom of Luzon. It was a walled and fortified city used for international trade. The ruling class used the Malay language for foreign affairs. Trade networks reached as far as China and Japan. Many nearby lordships, such as Tondo and Taguig, existed in this territory.

Spanish influence changed the region significantly starting in the 1500s. In 1570, the battle of Manila took place between the Kingdom of Luzon and Spain. This conflict led to the destruction of the original Manila. The Spanish then established a new settlement on the same site. They built a walled city known as Intramuros.

Different colonial periods reshaped the administrative boundaries of the region. During American rule in 1901, the province of Manila was dissolved. Most of its territory was moved into the new province of Rizal.

Later, in 1939, President Manuel L. Quezon established Quezon City. He intended for it to eventually replace Manila as the capital. During World War II, the area faced intense conflict. The battle of Manila in 1945 resulted in the loss of over 100,000 lives. Much of the urban development from earlier designs was destroyed during this time.

The modern National Capital Region was created through specific legal steps. In 1975, Presidential Decree No. 824 formally recognized the metropolitan area. This was done to provide integrated services to the growing population. In 1978, it was officially designated as the National Capital Region.
