Methanobacterium

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Methanobacterium are tiny living things. They belong to a group called Archaea. Archaea are different from bacteria. These tiny microbes make a gas called methane. This happens through a way called methanogenesis. This is a set of steps that turns carbon into gas.

They live in places with no oxygen. Oxygen is actually toxic to them. They can live in many spots. You might find them in warm soil or wet marshes. Some live in the bellies of cows and sheep. Others live in the human gut. Some even live in very cold permafrost.

Most like warm places. They grow well between 28 and 40 °C. They are shaped like little rods. Some rods are straight. Others look curved or crooked. They can live alone or in long chains.

These microbes are very old. They may have lived on Earth for 3.4 billion years. They help the Earth by recycling things. They use things like hydrogen and carbon dioxide to live. This helps move carbon through our world.
