Metal detector

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A metal detector is a tool used to find metal.

It can find objects on land or under water. Most machines have a handle and a control box. A coil at the end sends out a magnetic field. This field is an invisible force. When the coil gets close to metal, it makes tiny electric currents in that metal. These are called eddy currents. These currents make their own magnetic field. The control box feels this change. It then lets out a sound or a light to warn the user.
